This allows for a much stronger disc where the risk of cracks and catastrophic failures associated with inferior welded constructions is lower.<\/p>\n<p>The proprietary heat treatment of APS has a dual purpose. The heat treatment strengthens the steel by binding carbon, oxygen and nitrogen in the top metal layer. This is not a coating that can wear out because the steel itself is converted. The heat treatment gives the steel its black appearance and gives the surface a high resistance to corrosion and oxidation, which is accompanied by the extreme temperature changes in aircraft braking systems.
